How does Botox work?

As you age, the connective tissue in your skin breaks down. These tissues, known as collagen and elastin, work together to make your skin tight and supple. Besides the loss of your connective tissue, the cushioning layer of fat that separates muscle from the skin will gradually diminish. As a result of losing tissue and fat, wrinkles will begin to develop.

Botox is made up of very small amounts of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum in a purified and refined form. When injected, Botox interrupts signals that force muscle contractions. This allows facial muscles to fully relax, which ultimately helps your skin smooth out. When compared to other injections, Botox is particularly beneficial because it goes to work immediately. You should notice an improvement shortly after your treatment.

Botox is FDA approved starting at age 18. Dr. Marlow emphasizes the importance of starting treatment early, as it can prevent lines from ever forming on the face.

What does Botox treat?

Botox Treatment1

Botox is most commonly used as a cosmetic treatment. It works best when it’s used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in and around the forehead and eyes.

Botox may also be used to treat conditions related to bodily functions, including:

  • Chronic migraine
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

Is Botox permanent?

No. However, Botox is known for being long-lasting. Most clients find that it smooths moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles for up to four months. For fine lines, your treatment could last even longer.

Botox is priced at $12 per unit. Ask about our promotions or specials.

Some men and women who get Botox injections describe a slight pinching feeling upon injection. This is entirely normal and is well-tolerated. Botox shouldn’t be painful, but if you’re having an injection in a known sensitive area, like near the corners of your eyes, you might feel more stinging than you would in your forehead.
